Walk in Rwanda
Ulinzi Walk 2011 Trip To East Africa : Philippa Kibugu-Decuir & Lisa Bidelspach
Our trip itinerary was supposed to be: Departure June 6, 2011 at 6:45 am from Bush International Airport via Toronto, Montreal, Canada to Brussels, Belgium. Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda: June 7, 2011 at 7.45 pm.
Left to Right: Steve, Sterling, Munira, Philippa, John & Lisa, in front at airport, Montreal. We left on the June 6th, 2011 but arrived in Kigali on June 11, 2011 at 9.00 pm. We spent 3 days in Montreal, Canada due to incredible Air Canada aircraft mechanical dysfunctions consecutively for the three days! Yes, God was protecting us the “three bad days” of frustration resulted in incredible friendship establishment between us and Munira, a breast cancer survivor, Ugandan-Canadian, Steve, a media/news specialist, American working in Rwanda and Kenya, John, IT guru, Ugandan-Canadian and Sterling, American, Research Specialist heading for Rwanda. These proved valuable connections during the trip and later for we have stayed in touch. Mind you, on arrival in Kigali, our luggage was nowhere to be seen until June 12, 2011 at 1:30 pm. The Ulinzi Breast Cancer Awareness Walk is scheduled to start at 2:40 pm the same day – all banners, balloons, giveaways etc, etc are in the missing luggage!
Unbelievably, Roger, my amazing brother in law, with Sterling literary “FLY” to the airport, retrieve the luggage and bring it to the Walk Starting Station at RDB at 2:25pm, only to meet anxiously waiting and growing crowd of participants. The unloading enhances the excitement as everyone is eager to offer help to blow the balloons, open, carry banners and pass out ribbons and armbands.
